Ten80 Trip Reflection Journal

                                     Image result for ten80
        Friday March 5th, I was given the opportunity to attend the TEN80 education workshop sponsored by the U.S Army held at York College. It was a really fun event where I participated in a workshop. I noticed that we were all going to attend to a different categories where 6 different workshops were available. The Lead, the Pitch, the Race, the Game, the Beat and the Code. I went to pitch and so I had to follow a girl who was a representative of that single workshop. Afterwards they took us into an area and we were given some little project that we had to complete in small groups or individually. First a guy introduced how to sell a product and gave us background information and knowledge for it since the project we were working on was similar to shark tank. We had to come up with an idea or product and try to sell it and be like salesmen to everyone. So I went into this workshop with Sukanya and I worked with her. The idea we came up were a combination of all different type of glasses but into one pair of glasses. We did not get to present it though. After the workshop we were taken back to the auditorium where they did prize giveaways from the tickets they gave from participation throughout the event. We had lunch and we went back to school afterwards. I personally think this was a fun experience especially since I already did a shark tank project in web design but I was selling my website, so it was like a similar experience. I thought it would be better though if the person that gave the presentation was more enthusiastic and tried to make it more engaging since I could tell people were getting bore and impatient.

WBL Workshop # 2: Career DNA

               In this WBL workshop, the CTE students learnt about Dynamic Natural Abilities. In this workshop, we discovered our own career DNA (Dynamic Natural Abilities). This workshop was more like finding yourself and what you're good at based on a series of questionnaires and tests based on your personality that we took to find our career path. There are six different areas that tells us if we are compatible with it which are Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. The results I got were Realistic, Investigative and Artistic. I would say this is accurate since I am not really social and am kind of shy. I also like drawing and using my hands but am also a visual learner. Also when using my problem solving skills, I am realistic about the decisions/choices and outcomes. These were linked to some career choices which were to do with web design or managing or creating things. This workshop gave me options to see what I could choose from since they could go well with me and I have certain preferences and skills set in those areas.

WBL Workshop #1: WBL Requirements

           The first Work Based Learning Workshop for senior year was about the requirement of the Work Base Learning Requirements. In this workshop, the teachers told us about all the required documents and paperwork required to graduate with a CTE diploma and also about internship requirements and volunteer requirements. Moreover, there were also previous CTE students that we had an opportunity to talk to for experience about their internships and what they are doing now. You were able to learn from them and apply their advice to yourself. This workshop was kind of like a wake up call to make sure that you need to hand all of the requirements in or else you won't get the CTE diploma. Part of the requirements were doing an internship, doing community service and getting a letter for proof, reflection journals of trips and all wbl workshops, and more.

Gerson Lehrman Group Reflection Journal

               Gerson Lehrman Group was founded in 1998 by Mark Gerson and Thomas Lehrman as a publishing company focused on sector-specific reports for investors. Later they saw how they could change the way companies conduct primary research and began building a technical infrastructure, creating a new professional learning platform. It connects professionals all around the world  and eventually became a membership of leading experts providing advice for decisions related to businesses for a better outcome. They began hosting small meetings with biotechnology investors and scientist, later expanding beyond healthcare and technology fields with a power and energy practice (Energy and Industrials). Their headquarters is in New York and they have 22 offices globally with around 1,400 employees. GLG formally launched GLG Institute for executives operating in increasingly complex business, regulatory, and technological environments. GLG launched its online video series featuring GLG experts sharing their perspective and insights. The council members share their knowledge and expertise on the following topics: accounting and financial analysis, consumer goods and services, energy and industrials, financial and business services, healthcare, information technology (IT), legal/economic/regulatory affairs, real estate, technology, media and telecommunications. The services they provide are phone consultations, meetings, roundtable discussions, onsite tours, board placement, surveys, and strategic projects. They offer jobs in business development, research/client support, strategy, engineering, operations, and organizing events. I would like to ask them questions regarding computer science and the medical field. I wanted to know more information about those since I am still mostly undecided on what to major. Also I want to ask questions on their personal experiences to how they became an expert and successful, what struggles they overcame and how they knew what they wanted to do with their life.
                 So when I visited the company, I got to take a tour and did networking and met Daryl and Ujin and spoke to them, getting to know each other. During the tour, I noticed that they mostly have colors like red, orange and green. Also I was kind of shocked to see how casual and comfortable the office looked like since it looked like a stress free environment even though they do a lot of work. But there were a lot of flexibility and the advice the guest panelists and CEO gave were entertaining and serious. I had my questions answered during the networking session. I spoke to Ujin who first went into journalism but ended up in sales and she told me that she's in her 20s but still figuring out what she wants to do. Speaking to her made me realize that I should not get too overwhelmed because there are people who are like me still undecided and not sure about their passion but it does not mean that it is impossible to find something that you enjoy. She never could imagine herself in this job before until she gave it a chance. Also I learned that whatever you are interested in or have strong skills in, you should stick with it or the career path that you eventually choose will have those skills and qualities set. This trip made me think more about my future deeply and be more focused on it.

WBL Workshop #6: Be Moneywise Reflection Journal

              In this work based learning workshop, Mr. Franck was a guest speaker and he spoke about important tips for our future success. First he spoke about the research he did on what teens and people in their twenties worry about. Teens usually worried about fitting in and people in their twenties focused on their career and skills. It shows how our minds tend to progress as we get older, psychologically. Then he showed us what was missing on the list of what they should be worrying about which were their privacy that is a privilege, their time management and accumulating wealth. For time management: how you spend your time now will determine how your time is spent in the future. The time that passes by will never come back so it is up to how you utilize it, either productively or by wasting it. Another lesson was to become a learner instead of one who looks to be entertained. So basically open yourself up to learning opportunities even if they aren't fun because you will be able to use your knowledge to your advantage; knowledge is power. By reading a lot you will have a clearer mind and be more educated.
            The formula for wealth is wealth = assets - liability.
            Humans are creatures of habits so being able to understand your habits and have control over them will help you become successful. You can't solve your problems with the same thinking and habits that you used to create them because it is like doing the same things repeatedly and expecting for a different outcome which is crazy. He also spoke about being an owner instead of a consumer and to create goals for yourself everyday by physically writing them out so you pay more attention to whether or not you completed them. More tips were to guard your reputation and privacy (they're your lifeline), understand your resources and to pay attention to your surroundings. Surround yourself with successful people and you will become successful yourself.

Identity Project Reflection Journal

           For this identity project I first had to wonder about what identity means to me. That was when I noticed that there were so many different ways people can identify themselves based on: their gender, occupation, personality, or on their background, etc. Everyone mostly in the class was doing their website based on themselves but I wanted to be different, I wanted to create an identity website that everyone/anyone can relate to. I thought that why would someone visit my page, why would they want to know about my identity (they don't even know me or really care) so I tried to attract the viewer with something that they can connect with. I tried to work on my visuals because I know that I am lacking in that aspect so I attempted it by creating the fingerprint and identity image by myself. Every person has their own unique fingerprint so that could add on to their unique identity because not everybody is the same. I put a plain black solid background color because I wanted the website to be simple and to emphasize the content mostly, and black and white are good contrasting colors.
       The animation on the homepage tells us that your identity isn't really based on your appearance but whatever you want to be known as. I used jquery for the animation having it hidden and also fade in. On the background info/Religion page, I put all the continents and when you click on the image of a continent you get an alert box telling you about the culture there and and religion. Also when you hover over the continent name, the image slides down, kind of tried to use the accordion effect there for a previous lab I did. On the personality traits/qualities page, I did some research and found the big 5 personality traits and it seemed interesting so I used it as content by dividing each section up with the use of a table and putting images for visual learners. I also put a link where you can take a test and find out which one you can identify with if you aren't sure about it. Then on my sources page, I put down the copyright of all the images and content that I found online.

Lab 14 Stop Method Reflection Journal

           In this lab, I had to use my previous lab 13 and include a feature. I had to create a stop button that stops the animation and another one that stopped all of the animations and finished it to the end. I did this using the jquery stop() method. Unlike my previous lab, I created another column to put a button to stop each animation specifically for that animation. Then I put a stop all and finish button at the top because it would be easier to stop it if it was in the top and you could notice the difference. It was a bit hard doing this lab because it was a bit frustrating since the page wasn't fully loaded yet so I had to double click the button for it to work instead of clicking it just once and I had to be really fast too. Otherwise this lab was kind of easy since I just had to use the syntax shown below. These skills will help me in the future if I want to show the process of an animation, this could be included if the person that visits my page wants to skip the animation to the end.
The basic syntax is:
$(selector).stop(stopAll, goToEnd);

Lab 13 jQuery Animate() Method Reflection Journal

      For this lab, I had to create four division with different animations demonstrated using the .animate() method. First I created an html document with my overall css and then I made a table with 2 columns and 6 rows for organization. For the first animation, I changed the opacity so it would look faded and clear. I changed the width and for another one I changed the height of the division. Then I changed the position making it go to the left and come back to its original place. Then the last division had all of those effects above all in one division tag. I made only one button so when you click on the button it plays the function that contains the jquery code and all of them do the actions at the same time.
This is a sample of the jquery involved:
$("button").click(function() {
var div = $("div");
div.animate({height:"300px", opacity: "0.4"}, "slow"); });

Lab 12 Reflection Journal

                   For lab 12, I created something like an accordion using the dl, dd, and dt tags and with a jQuery function. It was nice learning about the new html tags that I had no previous knowledge of it. It was sort of like a list, with the format of a heading and subheading so I put colors that contrasted and went well with each other. I put in the jQuery function that was given to us and it used the addClass, siblings, and nth child attribute. I figured that it would work for things similar to the dl, dd, and dt tags like the li, ul, and ol tags, and it can also be applied to the table tags. I saw that there were many ways to do it producing the same outcome so I found it to be really cool and interesting. For the content, I had to write 8 questions and answers about a subject that I like, I chose web design. First I had to create these questions and answer them then put it in the dl, dd, and dt tags. After I checked that it worked, I uploaded it onto the server and submitted it.

Lab 11 Reflection Journal

              For this lab, I had to create a dim and bright effect that switches when I hovered over the division tags and it also replaced the text when you hover over it and when you hover out of it, it goes back to the original text. First I created the division tags with text on it and gave them id names. Then using jQuery, I made a variable containing the new text the original text would be replaced with. Using the id names I gave the division tags, I put a function for when the mouse enters and when the mouse leaves. When the mouse enters, I put a fading to effect on the division and using that division id name, I changed the html to put a different text speaking of the jQuery magic. Then when the mouse leaves, I put the original text back and put another fading to effect but with different speeds and opacity. I did the same thing with the other division tag. After that I uploaded it onto the server after I checked that it was working well. In the beginning there was like a glitch with my jQuery, because it kept on blinking from dim to bright instead of doing it with the hovering effect. Then I fixed it and put in something extra with replacing the text back to the original after I took the mouse out of the division tag.

Lab 10 Reflection Journal

             Lab 10 was my first jQuery lab where I learned how to use it to create effects and manipulate objects. I used the hidden, show, fade in, and fade out effects. I first made division tags and put css on it to make it look like a box/button. Then I gave them each a id name so that each of them can perform the specific effect that I wanted to display. I created a table to organize each of the demonstrations to be clear on it. For the jQuery, the format is $(id-name).effect and I put in something extra on the top of the table. I made 2 division tags with separate text of one division saying bye and fading out and then the other division right after that division disappears, fades in saying hello again and staying there. I combined all the effects together to show my knowledge and understanding of how to use jQuery for effects.

CTE Expo Reflection Journal

           On 2/13/17, we had our CTE Expo. I stayed 2 other periods besides my usual periods. During the expo, we meet with freshmen and we were trying to persuade them to join the web design academy. I talked about my experience in the web design academy, showed them examples of websites, and explained what we do during sophomore, junior and senior year. This is important because we are getting people to join the web design academy and continue our legacy. Some freshmen were co-operating and some weren't. However, overall I was able to spark interest in those freshmen that I spoke with. The qualities a salesperson should have is being able to communicate, be approachable, listen, be initiative, and persuasive.
            Talking to the freshman was like a scenario of the people in the CTE academies being salespeople and the freshmen were our target audience and/or clients. The preparation that should be made to deal with these situations is to be persistent in persuasion of them choosing the web design academy. It would be better if I were to practice my public speaking skills so I would know the exact words to say that give off a higher chance of them being persuaded. Also keeping in mind the qualities of a salesperson so you don't end up intimidating someone or have people run away from you and actually give you a chance to speak. The CTE Expo will continue to go well because there are already freshmen who have the mindset of going into this academy or not joining one and we can try to help persuade them to join one, preferably the web design academy.

Conversation on Finance HW

              For hw I had to talk to my parents about budgeting and money. They said that I could earn money by working at some part time jobs and make some cash. These jobs could be working as a cashier or be an assistant or something. The kind of jobs I could do in the future are maybe work for some company or it could be related to my major which is still undecided. They told me it's better to use a debit card rather than credit cards because you should use the money that you have instead of falling into debt by loaning money and paying it back with interest. They don't think young people should get credit cards because they're still not mature and responsible enough to handle it. They hope that I become a doctor and earn a good amount of money, enough to pay the bills, spend on things I need and/or want, and save for emergencies. They hope that I don't make the mistake of paying the least amount for credit cards just to pay it on time but to actually pay most of it as much as I can. They think that financial aid will help me pay for college and also I should work a part time job too to get earn some money while I'm in college. They don't really have any money role models, they just want me to be careful with budgeting and planning out how of use and spend my money.

Project 2: Client Site Reflection Journal

        For this project I had a group of 3 people, Sukanya (Designer), Ashley (CEO), and myself (coder). We had to create 2 websites for two companies that we were assigned. First our group worked on Code Breakers shoe website. We have a background of the city, our designer created the logo and helped with the design/layout of the website. Me and Ashley coded the website and Sukanya and Ashley found the images. We included their slogan "walk the street with city heat". We have 4 pages in total: homepage, shoes and prices, shipping, and sources page. The shipping page was very difficult due to the js validation of the form but we managed to solve this problem.
         For the JA Design phone cases website, we have 4 pages in total: homepage, iphone cases, samsung cases,  and sources page. The logo, layout of the website, and navigation bar were designed and created by our designer Sukanya. Our CEO Ashley helped find the images and code too. On the homepage is an iphone and samsung, the iphone has a hover effect and there is a very brief information about the company. The background was specifically requested by our client so we used it and made our font white so it could be easy to read. In the samsung and iphones case page there's a table of the image of the case with the description and price right next to it. You can click on the images for a pop up with the image and description. In the sources page we put down the copyright for the images.
        Our team has put in the requests and requirements of the website said by the client and tried our best to meet their demands. We also did a design report written by our Designer and CEO. I liked working with our team, our team work and having the experience of actually making a website for another person instead of for myself. We were just a bit worried about the time but overall it was a great experience.

Project 1 Calculator Reflection Journal

          For project 1, I had to create a calculator that adds, subtracts, multiplies and divides numbers. For the HTML part, I used the span and div html tags and put a class for each separate part. For example all the keys had the same class name while the operators have a different class name but is the same for each operator. Then I applied an external CSS style sheet which has box shadow, float, margins, padding, colors and background colors, hover, borders and more. Finally it's the challenging part of this project which was the JavaScript. I overcame this problem through the power of research. I had to use a for loop which repeats the action of clicking a key and putting it onto the display box and evaluating it when the equal button is pressed. The problem with the calculator is that it doesn't have a limit restriction so if you keep on putting in numbers, it goes off of the calculator. I also had to use booleans and replace the x sign with an asterisk so it would actually multiply through the computers language. This project was very challenging but I'm glad I was able to overcome it. The skills I've learned will be useful in the future because I can use it to create calculators for clients. After finishing the project I had to make a poster which shows the calculator and the HTML, CSS and JavaScript code with it and an explanation of the project.

Lab 9 Reflection Journal

              For lab 9 I had to create a form and have it validated using JavaScript. This lab was also very challenging for me because it was very confusing having it be completely validated with no errors. I created the table using the input and label tags, I didn't put them in a table. The form asks for the first and last name, date of birth, age, email and zip code. First I made sure that it resets and then I used JavaScript to make functions which I linked to the submit button using the onclick event handler. If you submit it without filling out anything pop ups will appear telling you to fill out those areas left blank. If you put it in correctly then it wouldn't say anything about it. The age was a way to confirm if the birthday entered is true or false. The limit I put on the age was 100. Also I learned about how you had to use regular expressions for the illegal characters. This lab is useful because I can use it in the future for companies/clients who are selling things or anything that requires making a form online.

Lab 8 Reflection Journal

             For lab 8 I had to show demonstrations of the 4 different types of loops which we learned about. The types of loops are the for loop, the for/in loop, the do/while loop and the whole loop. So I first created an HTML document and I put in 3 headings which contained the lab number, my name and the date and the course. I then created a table in which I organized it by putting the type of loop and next to it is a button in which when you click on it, it demonstrates that kind of loop. I linked the external CSS style sheet to the HTML document. I had to use an onclick event handler and the demonstration I put for the for loop is a loop which lists the even numbers up to 16. For the for/in loop demonstration, I put a loop which asks the user for their favorite color, name and age and it writes it out on the HTML document. I made a loop that asked the user for a number, decimal and symbol and write it out for the while loop demonstration. For the do/while loop demonstration, I have a loop that writes numbers from 4-7. This lab is useful and will be used in future labs and projects because it's much more convenient using loops rather than putting the same code over for several times.

WBL workshop - OSHA and labor laws

               In this WBL workshop, we learned about child labor laws and workplace safety. It was discussing about the work rights that minors have. Examples of these are that they have a right to a fair and full days pay, the right to a safe workplace and to file a complaint if your job is unsafe, and the right to equal employment opportunity and to work in an environment free from discrimination and harassment. Minors can't drive a 4 wheel vehicle, use power tools, work on a roof, slice meat with a machine, work with nuclear weapons, mine coal, do demolition work, and manufacture bricks or tiles.
              The legal work hours for 16-17 year olds are that they can't work more than 4 hours when school is in session, can't work more than 8 hours on the weekend, and can't work past 10 pm or before 6 am. Also they have to be supervised and receive training if required for their job. All students must sign a memorandum of agreement in the wbl program which covers the workers compensation in case of injury. OSHA which stands for Occupational Safety and Health Administration is a federal government agency that enforces job safety laws. Also to speak to an adult or teacher if you're being sexual harassed or if your workplace is violent.

WBL Workshop: Job Interviewing Skills Reflection Journal

            In this work based learning workshop, I learned various interviewing skills from the guest that came to speak to us, Mr. Chow from Wood Tobe-Coburn College. He said that the 5 interviewing skills that you need to know are appearance, body language, verbal, writing, and listening. The power colors are navy blue, dark grey, down and a black suit which we should wear during an interview. He said that companies hire based on the image that suits the company. For example a professional business wouldn't hire those that don't come dressed up professionally and have tattoos visibly shown on their necks. We got a list of interviewing questions from him that may be asked and also he practiced some of them with us. He also gave us a few tips and pointers. He also showed us how to properly introduce ourselves and shake hands. I really liked this workshop because it was very fun, interactive and useful.

Booleans Reflection Journal

          From the w3schools articles on booleans, I learned that booleans have only true or false values.   Comparison and Logical operator are used to test for true or false. Some examples of the operators are == (equal to), < (less than), and > (greater than). When using the == operator, equal Booleans are equal. The boolean value of 0 is false. The boolean value of -0 is false. The boolean value of an empty string is false. The Boolean value of undefined, null, false and NaN is false. Booleans can be defined as objects by using var x = new Boolean(false);. In the === operator, equal booleans aren't equal because it expects equality on both sides. Objects CAN'T be compared. The conditional (ternary) operator assigns a value to a variable based on some condition.
The syntax is:
variablename = (condition) ? value1:value2.
When comparing a string with a number, the string is converted into a number during the comparison. An empty string is converted to the number 0.
