Gerson Lehrman Group was founded in 1998 by Mark Gerson and Thomas Lehrman as a publishing company focused on sector-specific reports for investors. Later they saw how they could change the way companies conduct primary research and began building a technical infrastructure, creating a new professional learning platform. It connects professionals all around the world and eventually became a membership of leading experts providing advice for decisions related to businesses for a better outcome. They began hosting small meetings with biotechnology investors and scientist, later expanding beyond healthcare and technology fields with a power and energy practice (Energy and Industrials). Their headquarters is in New York and they have 22 offices globally with around 1,400 employees. GLG formally launched GLG Institute for executives operating in increasingly complex business, regulatory, and technological environments. GLG launched its online video series featuring GLG experts sharing their perspective and insights. The council members share their knowledge and expertise on the following topics: accounting and financial analysis, consumer goods and services, energy and industrials, financial and business services, healthcare, information technology (IT), legal/economic/regulatory affairs, real estate, technology, media and telecommunications. The services they provide are phone consultations, meetings, roundtable discussions, onsite tours, board placement, surveys, and strategic projects. They offer jobs in business development, research/client support, strategy, engineering, operations, and organizing events. I would like to ask them questions regarding computer science and the medical field. I wanted to know more information about those since I am still mostly undecided on what to major. Also I want to ask questions on their personal experiences to how they became an expert and successful, what struggles they overcame and how they knew what they wanted to do with their life.
So when I visited the company, I got to take a tour and did networking and met Daryl and Ujin and spoke to them, getting to know each other. During the tour, I noticed that they mostly have colors like red, orange and green. Also I was kind of shocked to see how casual and comfortable the office looked like since it looked like a stress free environment even though they do a lot of work. But there were a lot of flexibility and the advice the guest panelists and CEO gave were entertaining and serious. I had my questions answered during the networking session. I spoke to Ujin who first went into journalism but ended up in sales and she told me that she's in her 20s but still figuring out what she wants to do. Speaking to her made me realize that I should not get too overwhelmed because there are people who are like me still undecided and not sure about their passion but it does not mean that it is impossible to find something that you enjoy. She never could imagine herself in this job before until she gave it a chance. Also I learned that whatever you are interested in or have strong skills in, you should stick with it or the career path that you eventually choose will have those skills and qualities set. This trip made me think more about my future deeply and be more focused on it.
